“Do that again, Zach,” a tech calls to me. “I’m trying to get the level just right.”

From the stage, I nod and hit a chord on my electric guitar again. The tech adjusts some knobs on the sound board, then gives me a thumbs up.

It’s not an official soundcheck, but we wanted to get a head start on playing with our sound levels in a place like this. Every venue is different, so we want to make sure we’re loud enough that people in the nosebleed seats can hear us, but not so loud that everyone’s ears start bleeding.

I walk slowly around the round stage. Stacey did indeed come through for us regarding the guy she knows—the stage was delivered to the venue early this morning. It was a great idea. This way, we’ll be able to see everyone, and everyone will be able to see us. The stage even came with a raised rotating dais, so Luke, seated at his drum kit, will be able to see everyone too.

The other guys are practically out of their minds with excitement, running and skipping around the stage like little kids. I’m trying my best not to be a Negative Nancy, but the scene with my brother last night has me rattled.

I don’t care that he punched me. It wasn’t the first time, and it probably won’t be the last. That’s the kind of drunk he is. But I do care that he continues to disintegrate in front of my eyes. That he no longer sees me as his baby brother, but as an adversary when all I’ve ever done is try to help him. I’ve never hit him back, and I never will. I’ve taken jiu jitsu and taekwondo for years; I know dozens of ways to block his strikes and get him on the ground under control. The move I pulled yesterday wasn’t the first time I’ve done it. And despite my many fervent prayers...it probably won’t be the last.

He didn’t hit me too hard last night. He was too drunk. But there is a slight bruise on the side of my face. I suppose I can cover it up for the show if I want to. I don’t care much about it. I’m too heartsick to care.

What’s he gotten himself into this time? I strike a hard power chord that’s almost violent in its intensity. What’s he gone and fucked up that I have to fix?

“Penny for your thoughts.”

Despite my dark mood, I can’t help but smile a little at the voice behind me. I glance over my shoulder. Stacey stands there, head tilted to the side, studying me with a smile on her face. Her camera is draped around her neck. She’s been here all day, taking photos of everything, interviewing the crew and getting soundbites from us as she asks questions about preparations for the show.

Today she’s wearing a vintage AC/DC T-shirt, black jeans, a black leather jacket with the sleeves pushed up, and white tennis shoes.
